OVERNIGHT HIKING GEAR LIST


  • A rucksack big enough for your personal gear and a share of the patrol gear (tents/food/cooking equipment) – 55 litres capacity is good
  • Plastic bin liner for INSIDE your rucksack (in case it rains)
  • Warm sleeping bag
  • Optional sleeping sheet (keeps your sleeping bag clean)
  • Lightweight sleeping mat
  • Head torch or small torch with NEW batteries and spare batteries
  • Mess kit:-
  • − Dinner/breakfast bowl
  • − Mug
  • − Knife, fork & spoon
  • Clothing:
  • − Warm fleece/jumper (doubles as a pillow)
  • − 2 light tops – wear one, carry one
  • − 2 comfortable trousers/shorts for walking NOT JEANS OR COURDEROYS – wear one, carry one
  • − Change of socks for each day
  • − Change of underwear for each day
  • − Thermals (for sleeping in)
  • − Walking shoes or boots
  • − Rain coat/ waterproof trousers
  • − Hat and/or beanie (depending on season)
  • − Gloves if you feel the cold – recommended for ScoutHike
  • Sunscreen
  • Insect repellent
  • 2 x 1L water bottles (full) – not bladder as too hard to refill on track
  • Toiletries inc small amount of toilet paper
  • Personal medication, if necessary (labelled, with a note from a parent about use, dose etc.) 
  • Small personal first aid kit – space blanket, triangular bandage, band aids, elastoplast strip (covers blisters)
  • Smallish plastic bag for rubbish
Also essential: 
- A sense of humour
- Labels – on everything you want back! 

OPTIONAL: depending on hike activities/facilities planned or available:-
  •  small towel (if there are hot showers or water activities)  
  • Small bushcraft knife/multi-tool

Do NOT bring:  electronic games, speakers, aerosol cans, laser pointers etc or anything expensive you’d hate to lose/get broken
