PINDAR CAVE FOOD AND WATER

Pindar Cave - Food/water for the hike

Water
Water may be limited on this hike, though there is a stream downhill of the camp which was flowing strongly in August
Each scout will need to carry 3 litres of water. 2L milk bottles are good for this, with a 1 litre water bottle for sterilising water/use on the trail.
Water bladders are not recommended. They are very difficult to refill on the trail, are hard to sterilise water in and it’s hard to know how much water you have left at any time.
I will bring some spare 2L milk bottles on Friday. Consider buying 2L milk this week to have the bottle for the weekend.
We will be treating water to make it suitable for drinking
Come on Saturday with FULL water bottles!!
There will be a limited amount of emergency water with the group.
There will be extra water stashed at Wondabyne train station for when we return

Food
  • Scouts will each bring their own food for Saturday packed lunch, Sunday breakfast, Sunday lunch and all snacks
  • Except dinner, food will be eaten cold, no cooking/heating. Scouts will prep Sunday lunch at breakfast
  • You can bring cuppa soup/tea/coffee if you want at the camp
  • Lollies, chocolate and salty snacks make you thirsty and should be avoided. See water restriction above. Trail mix/muesli bars etc make better nutritious snacks
  • Nutrigrain is not suitable breakfast food for hiking, neither filling nor sustained energy. Weetbix/muesli/bars and fruit are a better option.
  • Skimmed milk powder works for milk for breakfast or tea/coffee. “Up and Go” is heavy and has extra packaging to carry out.

Dinner
  • Saturday dinner will be cooked in pairs and your scout should know who they are paired with.
  • Dinner needs to be a rehydration meal as this is the most water efficient. Flavoured cous cous pack/noodles etc from the supermarket where you just add boiling water and stand for a few minutes. Then add meat/veg as required. It must serve 2 people and you should have agreed who/how you are buying this already. It doesn’t have to be an expensive dehydrated hiking meal ~ $18 for 2!
  • You will be carrying out ALL your rubbish including uneaten food. Remove as much packaging as possible at home. Cut out any food prep instructions you need and just bring that or photograph it.
  • We are not planning to have spare water for washing up (though we may have it). We will wipe out the dinner pots and dishes.
  • Bring all food to the scout night this Friday
  • Bring at least one rubbish bag
