We had a great morning being involved in a community event with athletes of all abilities and hundreds of other Cubs, Scouts and Venturers. The early 5.30am start didn't put us off, and walking along closed streets in Double Bay was a novelty. We had an hour to set up the tables, line up all the cups and start filling them with water or sports drinks. It was a great chance to work as part of a team to get everything ready for when the first wheel chair athletes came racing along the course. There were cheers and claps from everyone, as they sped past us in a flash. Everyone was inspired by their determination and that of all the runners that took part, no matter whether they were the trumpet blowing runner, those in fancy dressed, the ball bouncing athlete, the teams, babies in prams and there was even a man who had completed EVERY city to Surf since it started. Some runners sped past grabbing drinks in a hurry and we had to duck as the empty cups were thrown on the road, others took the time to thank us for volunteering. There was so much energy from everyone and plenty of refreshments to keep the volunteers from getting hungry or thirsty. A fantastic event to be part of and 1st Northbridge Scouts and Cubs will definitely be back next year - especially as we raised funds for our pack at the same time as having fun.
