2016 Family Camp

10/4/2016

Family Camp 2016 was held at Camp Kuringai from Friday 8th April to Sunday 10th April. Most families braved the traffic and rain on Friday night and arrived in time to set up their tents in the dark ( but luckily the rain had subsided).

The Saturday dawned bright and sunny and was perfect for a canoe trip down the river. The cubs got to show off their paddling skills and teach their parents a thing or two about messing about in boats.  We stopped at a shady riverbank for morning tea before heading back to the starting point.

After a well deserved lunch of hamburgers prepared by the experts (Russell and Stephen), it was time for an exploratory walk planned by one of the cubs as part of his Grey Wolf Award. With afternoon tea delivered to the turn around point, everyone had plenty of energy for the walk back and a climb on the perfect climbing tree!

In the evening a succulent roast dinner was prepared by Hatty and enjoyed by one and all. This was followed by a brilliant campfire (started and maintained by the fire-loving scouts) and some great damper twists prepared by the kids.  The sing-along and skits were imaginative and entertaining and left everyone ready for a snug nights sleep.

The final morning included a range of craft activities for the kids, while the parents packed up the tents and cars, followed by some wide games across the campsite.

Scout Hike: Star Wars - May 2016

8/5/2015

The theme for this year's Scout Hike was Star Wars.

We had a great weekend at Scout Hike 2016. Keith, Russell and Mel went down on Friday morning after packing the trailer at the hall and got there about midday for a set up.

We think we had about 400 scouts through all told – about 300 on the first day and 100 on the second. They seemed to really enjoy it and the buzz through the patrols was to come to our base. It was a good mix of entertainment and learning and plenty of activity to keep them engaged.

The team on the base did really well. We had 2 Leias as planned, two evil characters (Darth Vader and Darth Sidious), Han Solo, Obi Wan and then everyone else was a rebel fighter or a Jedi. The R2D2 bin went down particularly well! By the end we were satisfied but exhausted, but had been marked twice by the HQ teams and then asked to stay in costume as the base closed on Sunday, which meant we were in the running for a prize.

We came 4th overall (out of 30 bases), which was awesome as it was my first time running a base.
